Externalizing Emotions

As therapists we hear "I don't know how to put what I am feeling into words." This activity requires minimal supplies and allows a lot of creative freedom (you can also use various art mediums).

First, set out paper that is divided into as many sections as desired (here I put out ones split into 4). Second, prompt the client by asking which four emotions they feel most frequently. Lastly, divide the remaining time into four (leaving 15 minutes at the end) and have the client create a visual representation of how each emotion makes them feel (focusing on one at a time). At the end of the session process about situations that trigger each feeling.

Here are two examples that include the feelings: happy, anger, sadness and worry.
